Disappointing failure is how I’d characterize most so called “green energy” solutions.

Should’ve put them solar panels on something that receives the most sunlight, you know like roofs. Or you know double down on nuclear power plants and start testing Gen IV reactors.

But nuclear plants are bad because the Americans used them to defeat fascism or something

Seems like it was worth a shot. Too much hype, obviously, but you don’t learn without failing.

Seriously, solar panel road surface.

For goodness sakes, house roofs make the most sense. It’s a vast area of wasted space.

How was solar roads even an idea.

“We can drastically reduce the urban heat-island effect and lighten the required load for * all* city dwellers by painting the roofs white”

“Also, we will pass a law that all new buildings have to have a certain portion of their roof covered in these black things.”

We had a lot of space devoted to pavement, and most of it just sits in the sun all day long, so I don’t think it’s a terrible idea. The problem of course coming up with a surface that is durable and grippy in a variety of conditions, while still letting enough light through the panels to be useful, which seems like a pretty difficult thing.

In any event, I do think it’s a good idea, just one that probably isn’t feasible with current technology.

Nuclear power, the ultimate Boomer energy solution.

Think of it as sequestering the pollution in the ground instead of spewing it into the air.

Those black things are converting most of that light to energy rather than heat, so I don’t think it’s a huge deal.

Seems like it was more of a feasibility study seeing as it was one a half mile long. When sciencing, you sometimes find out what doesn’t work.

The University of Arizona has been working on cool solar panel salsa gardens. The panels provide shade for the tomatoes and peppers and the transpiration from the plants cool the panels. They’ve put them up at a few schools.

I think humans have shown time and time again that we are too careless and short sighted to be trusted with nuclear energy.

All good, o nce Russia perfects nuclear rockets we can just launch radioactive waste into the sun

Name another power source that isn’t subject to environmental conditions that isn’t fossils fuels. Th ere isn’t one. While nuclear power shouldn’t be the only source of power, it should serve as the backbone of any energy grid supplemented by hydroelectric, solar and maybe wind where possible. Set up more breeder reactors for nuclear reprocessing, vitrification and Synroc the waste and get Yucca Mountain and deep borehole disposal test sites up and running, while transitioning to GenIV fast reactors.

Thats just it though, there are plenty of other areas that can much more easily retrofitted with solar panels

It was a misallocation of resources especially when there are other areas that are more easily retrofitted with solar panels. Perhaps when all other surfaces are covered in solar panels, would a feasibility study of making roads solar panels make sense.

If you still deep enough, your nuclear waste won’t be waste anymore, by will be in fact helping the environment. Add to the heat of the core and help boost the power source for the Earths magnetic field keeping everything safe.

And yet, they aren’t. There are a lot of reasons for that, but one is because it’s not especially efficient to do a bunch of custom small scale installations on roofs. A standard road solution would be better in that regard, and wouldn’t waste land like a dedicated installation. That said one place where we could really benefit is with solar covered parking. People want covered parking, and aside from making it darker, solar really doesn’t interfere with parking at all (and obviously for a parking lot, it makes a lot more sense to have the panels above the cars rather than embedded in the parking surface).

Never said it would be efficient. But if its efficiency that’s important , dedicated installations would be best, especially if beamed power ever becomes a thing in the future.

I do agree with your other point about covered parking. Not sure why they didn’t opt for that; g et all the low hanging fruit first

Actually, not “most.”

FYI, I do think photovoltaic is now viable ( with incentives) and will be outright viable soon. It’s just the lack of awareness of tradeoffs and knee-jerk “do something” reactions based on partial information  that bugs me.

Hmm, seems you were right, I thought efficiency was higher. Regardless, I don’t think avoiding heat island effects is really the biggest concern in most places, especially since you’ll note that most roofs are currently dark colored anyway.

Some kind of thermal transfer would make more sense, but road damage could cause issues. It would be good to keep power generation as local as possible but large facilities with molten salt etc... can make tons of power. I used to work for my friends dad in Hawaii gr owing up, lots of hot water solar there and PV ha s been going strong since it was more affordable. He is a solar mad scientist, we made solar ovens and solar water pasteurizers for 3rd world country projects where the people were cutting down all the trees to make fires to purify water and cook.

So you don’t think tier 3 or 4 nuclear reactorsn that uses the waste from tier 2 reactors is a good idea?

Granted, it seems like none of them are being made for some reason...

TBH, I have no knowledge of the new tech. What I do know is that there is a nuclear plant fifty miles upwind of me (and five million other people) with a sketchy safety history and no natural water supply that was built because of corrupt land deals. And the northern part of my state has had its groundwater polluted by uranium because of haphazard mining operations.

I simply don’t trust American industry with substances that have such long lasting effects.

Roofs sound good pending you don’t have to make any modifactions/fixes to the roof. Then your paying for a crane to come, remove the panels, fix roof, bring back crane to place panels. Also youre drilling a bunch of holes. If compete ntly done is fine....

Kinja'd!!! Svend > gmporschenut also a fan of hondas

Actually. We’ve solar panels on our house.

No crane used, nor many holes drilled.

Best way to describe it is a frame that hooks over the top of the roof with panels attached sitting proud of the main roof. They put some scaffolding up briefly and were finished in a few hours, then put a master control in the attic and wired it into the power supply with a reader and control box.

There are some units where the tiles themselves are the solar panels.
